Two Watermelons

1.

Mr. Kim is the first
visitor to my one bed-
room unit in Korea

Light sweat
faintly sheens
his forehead

A massive
watermelon
in his hands

2.

A good
bit of it
goes off

I have to throw it out

3.

A line of boy
students
faces
the corridor
wall

He pauses

Wipes at the sweat
on his forehead

A metre-long block
of wood
in his right hand

4.

Years later
My long blunt knife
shudders
as it cuts through
the watermelon

5.

With my right hand
I wipe at the juice
sticky on my upper lip

6.

I throw the hard
bit I cant eat
on our compost

Watch the flesh-
pink mass of
worms stir
